I live in the northeast and have recently started collecting orchids. So far, all of them have grown spikes, with lovely blooms. My ochids are placed in a southeast facing sunroom, where the night time temperature does not fall below 60 degrees, but the daytime varies between 65-80. I recently purchased a Vanda Pachara Delight in full bloom, 6 weeks ago. I am looking for guidance as to how long the blooms generally last, but more importantly, what are the signs that my plant might not be taking to its new environment? Any guidance or information would be greatly appreciated.

I was relieved to see that at least some of the cyps are going to bloom, since we've had really crazy weather. Four growths on this one, three with flowers, each of which has a shape issue. The close-up is of the middle flower which has the best overall shape, minus the warts. Last year's two flowers were perfect, but again, I'm just glad to see them at all this year. An advantage of growing these in pots in the ground outdoors is that I can lift them out when in bloom (or anytime, really) to photograph them or take them to meetings or shows. These grow in a raised be in the back yard all year in a mix prescribed by the guy I got them from, which is mostly granite grit!

On Tuesday, May 1st our Program Guest Speaker will be John Stubbings. He will be presenting 'Around the World for Orchids' a travel and orchid talk. His presentation offers pictures from his trip to the 20th World Orchid Conference in Singapore. It includes Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and India. Highlight was looking for orchids in situ with Michael and Benjamin Ooi.

John Stubbings is a retired chemical/environmental engineer formerly working in specialty chemical plants. Clown Alley Orchids is the family business started in 1986 near Chicago. In September 2005 he re-opened the orchid business with a full time retail shop in Pasadena, Texas where the greenhouse space is much larger. John is the chief grower and hybridizer. Clown Alley Orchids attends many shows and fairs each year exhibiting and selling orchids suitable for the south. Hope to see you there and Happy Orchid Growing!!!
