Denatured alcohol is ethanol with additives so you can't drink it. Isopropyl has got to be available in Mexico. Ask the pharmacist. Maybe they have it behind the counter.

Kathy is right. Denatured alcohol is ethanol (ethyl alcohol) with additives to prevent drinking it. Usually it is methanol but also things like phenolphthalein are used to denature it.

I agree with her that surely isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol) is available because denatured alcohol is too volatile for the uses to which isopropyl alcohol is usually put. Try looking for "rubbing alcohol" or some such name. If they do keep isopropyl alcohol behind the counter because of problems with people drinking it (it's deadly poison) maybe you should play dumb and ask for rubbing alcohol. You sound more innocent that way.

Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcohol, beer, liquor, etc. However, it is always at hand a chemical used in industry.
Methanol is the result of distilling ethanol incorrect. Called "timber" of alcohol, it can actually be produced in many of the same way that ethanol can.
Denatured alcohol is ethanol blended with something else, usually a good percentage of methanol to render it unfit for consumption and less desirable to drunks.Both can be used to various insect problem.
