growing brassavolas in home

I have a brassavola cucullata I have been growing at home for about 10 yrs. I recently noticed of the four new spikes one has turned brown. Of the four new spikes, the one that turned completely brown was the newest and smallest one (about 2" long while the other three are 6"long). I live in the NE. What went wrong with the spike?
