Dendrobium primulinum
For many years all the primulinum plants I ever saw were the cream lipped ones with purple lines. These plants had thick down curved canes. The few plants I saw locally were exceedingly poor bloomers, producing just one or two flowers if any, on an unpredictable manner. A few years ago, on a local orchid show I came across some plants labeled as primulinum with beautiful, large flowers with yellow on the lip. I was smitten and brought one of them. My plants has settled into what seems like a two year bloom cycle. One year it blooms well but the next it produces just one or two weak flowers that fade quickly. I have no explanation for this as the plant has been cared for the same way every year. Other Dendrobium plants of related species and hybrids that grow in the same area all bloom normally year after year. The flowers open with a decidely green tinge in the yellow area, the yellow color becomes brighter as the flower ages and reaches its brightest color just as the flower is near to dropping. My suspicion is that local climatic conditions are almost too warm for this species to bloom, so that year to year variation in temperature play an important role in its capacity to bloom well.
