Default Dendrobium moschatum a Dendrobium with a pouch

This plant has been with me for thirty years now. It has survived everything the local climate has thrown its way as well as periods of neglect or overcare with the same equanimity. It has followed me whenever I have gone and bloomed punctually when May and June arrived. I love the flowers as they have an unusual shape and several interesting features. Unfortunately the flowers are short lived, from three to five days. The fragrance is delightfully for me but some friends have described it as odd. Under good care some of the canes of my plants have reached six feet long. A cane can bloom several years in a row, and tends to produce keikis after the first year. A plant with more that two growing points and a few canes can be in bloom for a few weeks as young and old canes come into bloom.

A long-lived beauty. How nice to have a plant prosper for so many years. A tribute to your good care, Ricardo.

The mother plant of my plant, from whom I got keikis back in 1980 is still going strong in a huge raintree in the Mayaguez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, right next to the Celis building. In a panoramic photo in a yearbook of circa 1950 you can see the plant already large growing in the same tree. So this plant has been around at least sixty years, and probably more, growing on that tree. Since it is very generous with keikis, generations of orchid growing students have adquired this plant over the decades.

That plant has quite a history. The mother plant must be a wonderful sight to behold.

Hmm... I think I will see if I can make a trip to see it and the other orchids that have been growing in the campus trees for many decades.
