Default propagation

I am new at orchid growing so I am not sure what I have and I have a propagation question. Orchid had bloomed, cut it back and now from the stalk I have a plant growing about 4-6 inches. How do I remove it and plant it? I am being a nervous orchid mama!

I believe I have a Phalaenopsis orchid and it is propagating via the keiki method, however I do not see any roots, what shall I do?

Default Propagating Phals

Leave the keiki alone. It will sprout roots. Once it has a few roots cut the keiki at it's base where it is attached to the mother plant. Then repot the keiki in sphagnum moss (New Zealand spagnum) and watch it grow! OR you can leave the keiki attached and in time it will bloom along with it's mother.

I have had alot of successes with rooting keikies - and getting them to flower! My problem is that with each new keikie life born - MOM dies! Why? I've got 6 new growing orchids (some flowering right now), and 4 dead moms. Any ideas??

MonaAnn,

Yes as Lindlerd said wait until the keiki has its own roots until you detach it. About potting it in spagnum moss if it works for you as a medium great or if you use someting else that will be fine too.

Kevin732,

Sounds like you have a cultural issue. How long have you been growing Phals?
