Default Lepanthes sanguinea, rarely pictured

This orchid from the Puerto Rico rain forests is not in cultivation. To enjoy its flowers you have to travel to the mountains of the Sierra de Luquillo. It is rarely pictured as it is small and easily missed in the elfin forests where it lives. It is one of the few Lepanthes species that is found in more than one island of the Caribbean. It is also found in Jamaica.

A couple of growers grow this Orchid in Puerto Rico. My grandfather is one of them. But his plant was given to him by a friend 60 years ago. I grow this plant, but its a division from his mother plant.

Luis, you might have confused this plant with another one. This orchid grows only on the highlands at the east of the island in the sierra palm and elfin forest. It would probably quickly die in the hot lowlands unless given special care. As far as I know this plant has never been in cultivation in the hobby. As far as I know it was found in the island somewhere around the early seventies or late sixties. It is not particularly plentiful in its natural habitat.
