Default The Bow Bells Revolution - 'Orchids' mag

I was struck by the Black and Flory greenhouse picture. Look how low the roofline is (compare to the door). Its rather dark, too, no? Compare to just about any picture of today's bright, huge greenhouses. How in the world did they expect someone to reach the far side of the bench against the wall, much less water the orchids? No under-bench plants nor any hanging overhead. No plastic pots. And how did they manage to have 100 Bow Bells seedlings to sell to McDade in a time before flasking made having seedlings a sure thing? Much less have them arrive alive after being shipped from England to Tennessee in time of war, its not like the FedEx truck arrived daily. Incredible. My how times have changed.

Nice article, and nice issue.

I enjoyed the issue also, in particular Mauro Rosim's article about Cattleya velutina, a species I would love to grow some day.

I liked just about everything in this issue. Even Wes Higgins review of cattleya taxonomy. I'll have to find out what happened to L (C) dayana in the pumila article. It must have been reduced to a variety of pumila. Funny how the article says pumila is easy to grow but mine hate me. I think I must be growing it warm when its cool and supposedly its intolerant of salt buildup, which happens with my infrequent watering. Or maybe I repot at the wrong time. [sigh] So many ways to go wrong.

The article refers to the plant as Catt. bicalhoi rather than dayana. See pg. 326.
